DAY 12

Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market and Sera Monastery. After breakfast, our guide will take us to the Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market and Sera Monastery. Jokhang Temple: This temple is a 7th century temple in the heart of Lhasa and is the most sacred temple in all of Tibet. It is considered a Power Place in all of Tibet. Queen Bhrikuti, a Nepalese princess married to King Songtsen Gampo founded the Jokhang Temple and in recognition of Queen Bhrikuti the main gate of the temple faces west towards Nepal. The most impressive structure of the Jokhang Temple is the many chapels that surround the temple. Barkhor Market (Bazaar): The Barkhor Market (Bazaar) is a square where Tibetan handicrafts, Buddhist artefacts, carpets, paintings etc. are on sale for shoppers, a dream come true. At the end of the day, the guide will take us back to the hotel. Lhasa offers a good variety of restaurants for lunch and dinner. Sera Monastery: This monastery is approximately 5 km drive from Lhasa. Sera Monastery was founded in 1419. It is located in the most beautiful and charming surroundings at the base of Mount Purbuchok. Sera Monastery used to be an important center of learning, where in the past around 5,000 to 6,000 monks resided. Today, only 550 monks live there. Important structures within the monastery include the Coqen Hall (the main assembly hall), three Zhacangs (Buddhist colleges) and twenty-nine Khangtsens (monastic dormitories). The most intriguing feature here is the nine-meter-high image of Maitreya that was erected in 1419; here you can also witness the practice of debate between the monks, who pit their knowledge against each other. After the visit, we will drive to the hotel. O/N at the hotel in Lhasa (BB) Hotel: Hotel

DAY 13

Potala Palace and Drepung Monastery After breakfast, our guide will take us on a tour of the majestic Potala Palace and Drepung Monastery. Potala Palace: This palace is also known as the “winter palace”. The imposing structure of the palace dominates the Lhasa skyline. It is a complex monument with 13 floors, over 117 m high, housing 10,000 shrines, over 200,000 images and around 1,000 rooms. As you are guided through the ancient chambers of the palace, you will be able to see the best of Tibetan art. The Potala Palace has many intricate Tibetan murals and beautiful statues. Here you can also see the tombs of the eight Dalai Lamas. Due to the tourist traffic, only one hour is allowed to visit the Potala. Drepung Monastery: This monastery is located 8 km west of Lhasa, one of the three great Gelukpa monasteries near Lhasa, the other two being Sera and Ganden. Until the occupation, it served, like its two sister monasteries, as a center of monastic learning and training, where monks from all over Tibet would spend up to 15 years studying and methodically debating the meaning of Buddhist scriptures. For centuries it existed as a small monastic township that housed thousands of fully ordained monks and other staff. It was founded in 1416 by Jam yang Chöje Tashi Palden, a disciple of Tsong Khapa. After the visit we proceed to the Hotel. S/N at the hotel in Lhasa (BB) Hotel: Hotel

DAY 14

Shigatse, Gyantse, Khumbum and Pelkhor Stupa After breakfast, we leave Lhasa for a 370km drive, lasting about 6 hours including a break for lunch in one of the villages along the way. We will pass through two spectacular high passes - Kampa La at 4750m and Karo La at 5010m, past and alongside the beautiful deep blue-green lake called Yamdrok Lake or Turquoise Lake. The scenery of the Tibetan Plateau is truly unusual and spectacular. We will reach Gyantse, an ancient Tibetan city set against the backdrop of magnificent fortresses and temples from the 14th and 15th centuries. Here we will visit the Pelkhor Chode Temple and Khumbum Temple respectively. Don't miss the opportunity to take photos with the beautiful Tibetan mastiff and yak at the Khambala pass, there is a certain fee for the photo. Pelkor Chode: This monastery is located in the northeast of Gyantse, 3,900 meters above sea level. Pelkor Chode Monastery, or rather Palcho Monastery in Tibetan means "auspicious monastery". It was first built in the early 15th century and took 10 years to complete. Because it was built when different religious sects were in conflict in Tibet, Sakyapa, Kadampa and Gelukpa of Tibetan Buddhism coexisted in it. Each religious sect had five to six "Dratsang" (schools) in the monastery. This monastery occupies an impressive position in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. It is a mixture of a pagoda and a monastery, whose architectural style reflects the typical characteristic of monasteries between the late 13th and mid-15th centuries. The most iconic architectural feature of the monastery is the Kumbum Stupa, which is made up of nine layers of nearly 77 temple halls with a total of 10,000 Buddha statues in halls, niches and murals, hence the nickname “Ten Thousand Stupa”. Pelkor Chode Monastery is also known for its distinctive sculptures and murals. Kumbum: Gyantse Kumbum Chorten was commissioned by a Gyantse prince in 1427 and is the main attraction of the town. The 35-meter-high chorten, with its white tiers adorned with decorative stripes and its golden crown-shaped dome, is awe-inspiring. The interior is equally impressive. Kumbum means 100,000 images in Tibetan. In fact, there is what seems like an endless series of small chapels. Each chapel is decorated with mural paintings, some with multiple statues of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and deities. Most of the paintings date back to the time of the stupa’s construction. There are nine levels, 108 cells and 75 chapels. On the higher levels, you can step out onto an open-air terrace and enjoy stunning views of the city, the monastery and the surrounding fort. After a visit, we head to the second largest city in Tibet, Shigatse. Opening hours at the hotel in Shigatse (BB). Hotel: Hotel

DAY 15

Tashilumpho Monastery and return to Lhasa After breakfast, we visit Tashilumpho Monastery. This monastery is one of the largest functioning monasteries in Tibet and there is much to explore within the high surrounding walls. There are about 39 incredible chapels inside, including the enormous gold-plated Maitreya Chapel; its workmanship is sure to impress. After the detailed tour of Shigatse, we visit the local markets for shopping and sightseeing. We then return to Lhasa via the national highway, which is about 271 km, approximately 5 hours to reach the capital Lhasa. Check in at hotel. Overnight Hotel: Hotel
